PREFACE.

THE manuscript book containing the following register of baptisms consists
within its boards of 134 leaves. On the first page is the notice regarding
the church of Bairnie and its officials, down to the word " beadle." This is
followed by two and a half leaves of church collections and distributions.
Those for 1763 appear to have been collections for the erection of the chapel,
which seems to have had four windows, and from the entry " To Geo. Sangster
for casting 7000 divots, 7s.," was probably roofed with turf. The collections in
that year appear to have amounted to ^16 : o : i, with ^i : los., " Bp. Gerard's
contribution to Udny," borrowed. A minute, dated Ellon, 3rd July 1766, of a
meeting of the minister and elders of the chapel at Bairnie regarding the funds
of the chapel, occupies the next page, which is followed by eight leaves of
church collections and disbursements from 1766 to 1774. The next page con-
tains the particulars regarding the church at Tillydesk, which are printed on
page 7. The next page consists of contributions for the chapel, and the next
page distributions, both evidently referring to Tillydesk, followed by six and a
half leaves of church collections and distributions from 1776 to 1783, and after
a blank leaf there is a leaf of " money received from the congregation at Tilly-
desk, from 1783 to 1787."

Turning to the other end of the book, the second leaf begins "List of
baptisms," and on eleven and a half leaves are the baptisms as printed down to
26th August 1783. The next page is blank, and on the next are the seven
entries relating to the Kennedys. The rest of the book is blank.

It is interesting to notice that, owing probably to the disturbed times after the
'"45" the practice in Episcopal congregations of bringing infants to be baptised
in the chapels had become neglected, and each priest for the most part travelled
through the districts assigned to him for the time being, and baptised infants
in their homes or at other convenient houses. The following Register therefore
contains a list of baptisms celebrated by the priest to whom the Register
belonged. The chapel is understood to have been removed from Bairnie to
Tillydesk about the year 1776, and this is probable, as a new page is commenced
in the end of 1775 for recording baptisms, and the handwriting is changed at
this date. I have therefore ventured to allocate the baptisms prior to loth May
1775 to the period when the chapel was at Bairnie, and those of a subsequent
date to Tillydesk.

On a loose page inside the book were the following Jacobite verses : —

Seventy-nine years before 1739, /.<?., in 1660, Charles II. was restored on the
29th of May. Why the loth of June was celebrated I am not aware.

The chapels at Bairnie, and later at Tillydesk, were places of worship set up
by the Episcopal congregation, which up to about the year 1705 worshipped in
the Parish Church dt Ellon. After the " '45," information was laid in the proper
quarters that services forbidden by the Acts 17 19 and 1746 were being held,
and a company of soldiers was despatched from the garrison at Aberdeen, and
the chapel at Ellon was demolished, as was also the chapel at Green of
Udny, in a neighbouring parish. It was not until 1764 that the Ellon congre-
gation ventured to set up another chapel, and this not in Ellon but some two
miles or more out, in a retired spot on the road from Ellon to Dudwick Hill, in
the district known as Bairnie. For some reason, about the year 1776, this
chapel was given up and a move was made to Tillydesk, Turnerhall, some three
miles further away^ but still in the parish. There the congregation was served
by priests, who for a time also served the Old Deer congregation at Crichie^
but later the Udny congregation at Chapelhall, Esslemont. This latter ar-
rangement continued until 1817, when, on the advice of Bishop Skinner, once
himself the priest at Bairnie, a chapel was erected at Craighall, Ellon, to serve
both the congregations, and at this date the chapels at Tillydesk and Chapelhall
were dismantled and the woodwork was rouped. The site of the chapel at
Tillydesk can be traced in the garden of the present farm of that name.

Possibly the most interesting entries in the baptismal register are those
relating to the family of John Skinner, afterwards Bishop at Aberdeen.
According to the Dictionary of National Biography, he was the son of John
Skinner, schoolmaster at Echt, afterwards minister at Longside. The future
Bishop is stated to have been born at Longside on 17th May 1744. He was
ordained deacon in 1763, priest in 1764, and appointed to the congregations of
Ellon and Udny, and in 1775 to Longacre. His wife, whom he married on
27th August 1764, was a daughter of William Robertson, Episcopal clergyman,
Dundee. Bishop Skinner's second son, William, is stated in the Dictionary of
National Biography to have been born at Aberdeen on 24th October 1778. It
will be observed, however, he had a son of that name baptised on 20th July

1773-

The manuscript volume was among a number of other papers which

belonged to a son of the Rev. Mr. Cruickshank. These were being burned, but

a servant preserved the volume, which now belongs to Duncan Warrand,

Esquire, 16 Buckingham Gate Gardens, London, S.W., and is published by

his kind permission.
